Resident asks Washington County to convey Veterans Field to local charter school; commissioners discuss reversion terms

During public forum at the Jan. 4 Washington County commissioners meeting, Thomas Patrick of Creswell asked the board to convey Veterans Field to Pocosin Innovative Charter School (PIC), saying he has maintained the property.
Commissioner Carol Phelps said she has been working on the matter and thanked County Manager Curtis Potter for his assistance. Potter said any conveyance would need a written agreement providing that the property would revert to the county if the school dissolved. Chair Bill Sexton said he wanted Recreation to retain the ability to use the field.
Potter said he will reach out to Constance Davenport, identified as the point of contact for PIC, and arrange a conference call with Commissioner Phelps, Davenport, Potter and Recreation Director Mr. Fulford to discuss terms. Commissioner Ann Keyes voiced support for retaining recreational access to the property. Commissioner Walker asked whether other groups use the field; Phelps said members of the Spanish-speaking community have used it for soccer.
No formal action was taken to convey the field at the Jan. 4 meeting; the board said staff will investigate options and discuss the matter further at the budget workshop or in subsequent meetings.
