Washington County board approves one-year, $102,500 salary for county manager

The Washington County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on Aug. 2 to approve a one-year, flat salary of $102,500 for County Manager Curtis Potter, effective Aug. 16, 2021.
The decision followed a closed-session discussion called under North Carolina statute. Commissioner Carol Phelps moved the measure after the board returned to open session; Commissioner Julius Walker Jr. seconded, and a roll-call vote recorded five yeas.
Commissioner Phelps said, "Back in Open Session, Commissioner Phelps made a motion to approve a flat salary rate of $102,500 for one year starting 8/16/21 for the County Manager and that his salary for future years would be considered during the regular budget process." The board recorded the motion and adopted it.
The board had first moved into closed session on a motion by Commissioner Tracey Johnson, citing NCGS §143-318.11(a)(3) for attorney-client privilege and NCGS §143-318.11(a)(6) for personnel matters. The closed-session motion carried by roll call before the salary action was brought in open session.
No additional changes to the county manager's long-term compensation were made at the meeting; the board specified that any future adjustments would be considered in the regular annual budget process. The meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.
What happens next: The salary is effective Aug. 16, 2021; future compensation will be set during upcoming budget deliberations.
