Charlotte County delays public hearing after resident flags real estate tax rebate issue

Chairman Gary D. Walker read a public announcement at the Charlotte County Board of Supervisors’ Aug. 14 regular meeting saying county staff received an email from resident Kathy Liston asserting that the real estate tax rebate ordinance adopted in October 2022 has not produced the board’s intended result.
The board said staff will investigate Ms. Liston’s concerns and report back with recommended action. The announcement said any board action taken at the Sept. 11 meeting will be timely and that the public hearing scheduled for Aug. 14 to receive comment on a draft ordinance that would pay taxpayers a portion of previously paid real estate tax was canceled in light of the new information.
The announcement enumerated the board’s preliminary steps: it acknowledged receipt of the matter, instructed staff to investigate and advise the board, stated that action on Sept. 11 would be timely, cancelled the evening’s public hearing, and said the board would advertise a public hearing for the Sept. 11 meeting on the ordinance as drafted or as revised.
The announcement was read by Chairman Walker; the transcript attributes the message to the board rather than to a single speaker’s new policy decision. No formal vote on the ordinance was taken at the Aug. 14 meeting.
