Catawba County approves surplus equipment donations and awards Sherrills Ford convenience‑center contract

At its Aug. 18 meeting, the Catawba County Board of Commissioners adopted a consent‑agenda resolution (2025‑33) declaring surplus county property and approving donations to local emergency response and training partners. The items include a 2015 Chevrolet ambulance to Maiden Rescue Squad, Stryker Power System cots to Catawba Rescue Squad and Claremont Rescue Squad, a 2015 Chevrolet ambulance and 47 Motorola APX2500 radios to Catawba Valley Community College (CVCC). The Board adopted the donation resolution by unanimous vote, and staff noted the county’s local vehicle donation policy and the statutory authority (N.C.G.S. § 160A‑279) that allows conveyance for public purposes rather than sale on GovDeals.

Separately, the Board awarded the construction contract for the Sherrills Ford Municipal Solid Waste Convenience Center improvements to Randolph & Son Builders, Inc. of Pineville, N.C., for $1,144,743.35. McGill Associates reviewed bids opened July 25, 2025, and certified Randolph & Son as the lowest responsive and responsible bidder. The project scope includes a new entrance and access road, elevated drop‑off pad, attendant shelter, additional electrical service, retaining walls, concrete and asphalt paving, security cameras and perimeter fencing. The county approved a $275,000 appropriation from the Solid Waste Enterprise Fund to support the project; staff emphasized that the Solid Waste Fund is supported by user fees, not ad valorem taxes. The award and budget revision were approved unanimously.
