Durham County read resolution honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; DCo Thrives guaranteed-income program announced

The Durham County Board of Commissioners opened its Jan. 13 meeting with ceremonial and public-interest announcements, including the reading of a resolution honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The resolution recognizes King’s life and calls on Durham residents to advance his legacy.
Dr. Brent Lewis, Director of Equitable Well-being, thanked citizens who submitted the resolution and reminded the public that the City-County MLK Employee Observance Program will take place Jan. 28 at First Presbyterian Church.
Clerk Monica Wallace announced the DCo Thrives Guaranteed Income Program, administered by Durham Children’s Initiative and funded by the county. The program will provide 125 randomly selected applicants $750 per month for 12 months; an additional 125 families will be randomly selected to complete monthly surveys and will receive $100 for each survey.
The board also listed several community events and resources, including Bike+Walk community sessions, food security grants (application deadline Jan. 22), dementia-caregiver education programs, and public engagement for the city’s Unified Development Ordinance update.
Commissioner Wendy Jacobs asked staff to provide the total county funding for food-security grants; County Manager Claudia Hager said she would follow up. The board approved multiple consent agenda budget and capital project amendments as recorded in the meeting minutes.
