Monroe County launches monthly gun-safety workshop; residents question pilot selection and school outreach

County officials and community partners announced a new gun-safety workshop at the Monroe County Safety Center during the Feb. 4 commissioners meeting, and residents used the public‑comment period to raise objections and questions about a related pilot program.

Commissioner Sharon S. Laverdure reminded attendees that a gun-safety workshop would be held that evening. Dr. Toleno, who described the class as the first in what the county plans to offer monthly, said more than 40 people had signed up. He said three sheriff deputies would provide lessons on handling and secure storage, that each participant would receive a complimentary gun lock, and attendees would be entered into a drawing to win a biometric gun safe. Dr. Toleno, along with Jake Jakobsen and Detective Parrish, thanked the commissioners for their support in putting the workshop together.

During public comment, Nicholas Testaccio voiced objection to groups, grants and surveys on gun safety in schools. Theresa Pesce asked why Monroe County was chosen as a pilot program for gun safety, saying her research did not show an epidemic of youth firearm violence; she referenced a Nov. 24, 2025 meeting with the Lieutenant Governor. Audience member Jane Gagliardo asked Pesce to clarify the research she cited.
