Gun safety training announced for Jan. 17; residents urge broader recognition of firearm-related risks

Dr. John Toleno told the Monroe County Board of Commissioners on Jan. 7 that a Community Partnership for Gun Safety grant-funded event will offer a free gun safety training on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Monroe County Public Safety Center. The event is limited to 50 participants and interested residents may register via the website gunsafetymonroepa.org.
During public comment, Theresa Pesce praised the class but urged the county to recognize that not all firearm accidents involved conventional firearms. Pesce said that, based on information she obtained from the Coroner’s Office, one death had been caused by a BB gun and that the broader dataset should be acknowledged in safety messaging. The board did not record a formal response or policy action in the minutes beyond the event announcement.
The announcement was part of a larger community safety and outreach agenda; commissioners noted the grant-funded nature of the Community Partnership for Gun Safety initiative and public interest in accurate cause-of-death information.
