Butler County engineer updates board on railroad crossing elimination grant near Logistics Park

County Engineer John Riherd updated the Butler County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 20, 2024 about the status of a railroad crossing elimination grant and related Section 130 funding for the Iowa Northern Railway near Logistics Park.
Riherd said the county is working in conjunction with Cedar Falls on the grant and described the county’s role in the effort. He said the overall goal is to add roadways that allow trains to operate and conduct break tests without obstructing traffic, and noted that the projects are already included in the county’s five-year program.
Riherd also provided a routine operations update: rock work on county roads has been completed, ditch work and mowing are ongoing, and the engineer’s office plans to advertise for several positions in the near future. No formal vote or decision on the grant was recorded during the session.
