Butler County approves $1.4M in federal bridge overlay agreements and plans hires for bridge crews

Butler County Engineer John Riherd told the Board of Supervisors on Oct. 15 that the county will move ahead with bridge deck overlay projects under four Iowa Department of Transportation federal‑aid agreements, estimated at a combined $1.4 million and expected to be 100% federally funded.
Riherd said the overlays are forecast to extend the service life of each bridge by roughly 25 to 30 years. The agreements approved cover the following structures and agreement numbers as recorded in the minutes: T55 bridge over West Fork Cedar River (Agreement #2‑24‑HBP‑S‑021); T25 bridge over stream north of 250th St (Agreement #2‑24‑HBP‑S‑035); T25 bridge over stream north of 245th St (Agreement #2‑24‑HBP‑S‑036); and T25 bridge over West Fork Cedar River (Agreement #2‑24‑HBP‑S‑03).
Supervisor Greg Barnett moved to approve the funding agreements and Supervisor Rusty Eddy seconded; the motion carried with all present supervisors voting aye. Riherd also updated the board that bridge crews will begin shouldering work near Austinville, concrete work at the Public Health building was completed, and interviews will be scheduled for at least three new hires for bridge crew positions.
