Rezoning first reading for 10.393 acres fails 2–3 after Planning Commission recommendation

A proposed rezoning that would have redesignated 10.393 acres along Witt and Cal Harris roads from Agricultural to Heavy Industrial failed to receive a majority on first reading at the Simpson County Fiscal Court meeting on Aug. 6, 2024.
Magistrate Marty Chandler moved to approve the first reading of the zone change and Judge Executive Mason Barnes seconded. The Franklin–Simpson Planning & Zoning Commission had recommended approval following its June 4, 2024 meeting and provided Findings of Fact and Conclusions of Law to the court, but the fiscal court vote was 2 in favor (Chandler and Barnes) and 3 opposed (Magistrates Myron Thurman, Scott Poston and Jeffrey Burr), so the first reading failed.
The matter had been considered previously at the July 16 fiscal court meeting, where members also could not reach a majority to approve first reading. Because the first reading failed again, the proposed rezoning does not advance at this time; opponents did not record a formal statement in the minutes explaining their votes. The court may revisit the matter on a future agenda if proponents bring it back.
