Court authorizes search for grant writer as fire chief reapplics for FEMA air-pack grant

Simpson County Fiscal Court on Dec. 17 authorized advertising for a contracted grant writer to assist the county in pursuing grants, a step Magistrate Marty Chandler said is needed to support departments pursuing outside funding.
The motion to advertise for a grant-writer contract was moved by Chandler and seconded by Magistrate Myron Thurman; the minutes record the vote as unanimous. Chandler said the Fire Department needs new air packs and has pursued FEMA Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) funding to cover the cost.
Fire Chief Leslie Goodrum told the court the county applied earlier for a FEMA AFG grant and was denied in October. Goodrum said the AFG application process reopened at the end of November and that she is reapplying with assistance from BRADD to address the earlier denial and meet the Dec. 20 application deadline.
The minutes record no dollar amount for the requested air packs at this meeting and do not show a guaranteed funding source; Barnes and others encouraged the fire department to pursue grant support. The authorized advertisement will seek a contractor or consultant to prepare or coordinate grant applications for Simpson County departments.
