Commission postpones Highway Garage bids; approves sneeze guards and other capital items

Cheatham County commissioners on Aug. 17 deferred action on the Highway Garage project and approved pandemic-related protective equipment for meetings.
During the Road and Bridge portion of the meeting, an initial motion to accept the lowest bid for the Highway Garage was withdrawn. Commissioner Ed Greer then moved and Commissioner Eugene O. Evans, Sr. seconded a motion to postpone the Highway Garage project until the September meeting and require that a complete set of bid documents be sent to the Capital Improvements committee for review and recommendation. Commissioner Gary Binkley asked that the resolution be separated. The motion passed by roll-call vote 8 Yes, 4 No.
Separately, the Capital Improvements committee moved to buy three-sided sneeze guards for commission meetings at a total cost of $2,150, with funding drawn from COVID money; the full commission approved the purchase by roll-call vote, 12–0. The Capital Improvements discussion also covered a proposed HVAC unit at the Courthouse Security Post, build-out for the Veterans Service Office, new bathrooms at Sycamore Square and logs stored in the Maintenance Building but the minutes do not record final decisions on those items beyond discussion.
