Cheatham County commission votes to put liquor-by-the-drink question on Nov. 8, 2022 ballot

Cheatham County commissioners on Dec. 20 approved a resolution directing the county election commission to place a referendum on the Nov. 8, 2022 general-election ballot on whether to allow the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises in unincorporated areas of the county and within municipalities that have not previously approved such sales.
The motion to adopt the amended resolution was made by Commissioner Walter Weakley and seconded by Commissioner Eugene O. Evans Sr.; County Attorney Michael Bligh told commissioners the question would appear on the Nov. 8, 2022 ballot. The resolution passed by roll-call vote, 10 Yes, 0 No, with two commissioners absent.
The measure, prepared under Tennessee Code Annotated §57-4-103, will ask voters to choose between the printed options “For legal sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises in Cheatham County” and “Against legal sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on the premises in Cheatham County.” The resolution directs the election commission to include the referendum on the county ballot, subject to the statutory restrictions in Title 57.
Supporters on the commission said placing the question before voters would allow restaurants and other businesses outside municipalities that already permit liquor-by-the-drink to pursue on-site alcohol sales if local voters approve; the meeting record shows no public speakers testified for or against the resolution during the legislative session.
Next steps: the county election officials will carry out placement of the question on the November 2022 ballot and publish the referendum language and calendar per state election rules.
