Cheatham County commission approves amended redistricting map after debate

The Cheatham County Legislative Body approved an amended version of the Redistricting Committee’s Plan 1 on Nov. 15, 2021, adopting a change that moves 138 residents from District 3 into District 4.
John Thomas of the Redistricting Committee explained the amendment’s effect on population deviations, saying the change “will make District 4 the largest district with a deviation of 6.09% and if combined with District 5 with a deviation of - 3.39% the whole percentage is 9.48% which will not exceed the 10% allowed by the state.” The commission voted 7 in favor and 1 opposed; Commissioner Tim Williamson voted No.
A separate proposal to move Bluff View Street from District 5 back to District 1 was introduced by Commissioner David Anderson but withdrawn after discussion and the withdrawal of the second. With the Bluff View proposal removed, the body proceeded to approve Plan 1 as amended.
Commissioners discussed growth patterns in Districts 1 and 3, with John Thomas noting the amendment “will give room for growth” in those faster-growing districts. The approved adjustment was presented as keeping the overall deviation under the state’s 10% threshold for permissible variation among districts.
The commission’s action finalizes the county’s adopted map as amended; commissioners set a Special Called Meeting for Nov. 30 to address separate funding for a new jail. The redistricting motion was recorded by roll call as 7 Yes, 1 No, 4 Absent.
