Sevier County adopts standard inspection codes; fire inspection fee proposal sent back for staff review

Director Chris Jenkins presented Resolution 2023‑06‑09 on June 13 to adopt various standard codes for Sevier County inspection activities under Tennessee Code Annotated, Sections 5‑20‑101 through 5‑20‑106A. Commissioner Ray Ogle moved to approve; Commissioner Chuck Godfrey seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Fire Marshal Josh Tucker and Chief David Puckett (participating via Zoom) then presented a proposed fee schedule for fire‑code and life‑safety inspections. Commissioner Jack Parton asked what the proposed fees would fund. Mayor Waters, Vice Mayor Bryan McCarter, Fire Marshal Tucker and Director Jenkins said the fees would fund the county’s newly acquired Sevier County Fire Department and pay for proposed new fire inspectors. Commissioner Michael Maddron expressed concern that the number and size of the proposed fees would place an undue burden on cabin owners. The committee directed the mayor’s administrative staff to review the proposed fees and return to the committee with alternatives and additional options.
The committee adopted the standard codes and deferred final action on the proposed fire‑inspection fee schedule pending administrative review.
