At its Oct. 20 meeting, the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution requesting that the Tennessee General Assembly allocate one-half of the real estate transfer tax to the county where it is collected on a recurring basis.
Commissioner Joe Sherrill moved the resolution, seconded by Commissioner Deborah Holbrook. The minutes state supporters argued the change would reduce pressure on local property taxes and allow investment in infrastructure and services without increasing the tax rate. The motion passed by unanimous roll-call vote.
The resolution is a formal request to the state legislature; it does not change law. Any alteration of state-collected tax distribution would require action by the Tennessee General Assembly.
