Commission approves $112,500 county match for health-department modernization

The Claiborne County Commission voted 20–1 on Feb. 28 to provide a $112,500 county match for a $450,000 state-funded modernization of the local health department.
Commissioner Juanita Honeycutt presented the item and identified infrastructure and operational improvements on the project list: building construction and repairs, an electronic message sign, paving and striping of the parking lot, exterior cleanup and lighting, interior lighting, a building generator, HVAC work, and audiovisual and IT upgrades. The county match represents 25% of the total project cost; the state would provide the remaining 75%.
A motion to table the request failed on a roll call of 8–13. After further discussion, the commission approved Resolution 2022‑024, which reallocates ARPA line items to provide the county’s portion of the match. Supporters said modernization would improve clinic efficiency and services; one commissioner voted against the measure, citing a need for additional oversight before committing county funds.
The resolution adjusts ARPA fund lines and instructs the finance office to move $112,500 into the ARPA building‑improvements account to cover the match. Commissioners said project-planning details and contracts will be returned for further review and approvals.
