Mayor says rehab center deed transfer in process; commission hires Veterans Service Officer

After discussion about the proper procedure for approving and hiring the Veterans Service Officer, Commissioner David Mundy moved to suspend the rules so the commission could take immediate action; Commissioner Kim Large seconded. The motion to suspend the rules passed by voice vote. Commissioner James Hatmaker then moved to approve the hiring of Gary Hansard; Commissioner Sherry McCreary seconded. A roll-call vote recorded 20 for, 0 against, and the motion carried.
Dan Spurlock of the Stand in the Gap coalition addressed the commission in public comment about local drug-overdose statistics, a drug-take-back program and a juvenile training class in partnership with Juvenile Court, noting pandemic-related changes in drug trends.
Next steps: county staff will complete the deed transfer process for the rehab center and finalize onboarding for the Veterans Service Officer.
