Commission OKs bridge replacements and highway budget amendments totaling nearly $1 million in state aid

Claiborne County commissioners on Nov. 15 approved several highway-related budget actions, including recognition of State Aid Bridges revenue to fund two bridge replacements and amendments to the highway budget to cover additional asphalt and labor costs.

Resolution 2021-104 authorizes recognition of approximately $990,000 in State Aid Bridges revenue and appropriates funds for two bridge replacements: Bucklick Lane (Sycamore Creek) in District 4 and Academy Road (Davis Creek) in District 8. Commissioner David Mundy said the additional state funding requires a county appropriation to be expensed; the resolution passed by roll call, 20–0.

The commission also approved Resolution 2021-105, a budget amendment reallocating undesignated fund balance to increase asphalt and contracted services funding and to cover related payroll taxes and retirement contributions. That resolution passed 20–0.

Separately, Resolution 2021-106 records an insurance recovery of $27,140.40 (less a $2,500 deductible, net $24,650) for a highway vehicle damaged by lightning and authorizes purchase of a state-contract replacement vehicle; the insurance documents and dealer quote were included in the meeting materials. The resolution passed 20–0.

Road Superintendent Ronnie Pittman had previously presented the highway equipment list for information. Commissioners recorded no dissent on the highway measures, and staff will implement procurement and contract work consistent with state and county purchasing rules.

The county did not discuss contractor names or construction schedules at the meeting; staff were directed to proceed with statutory procurement and accounting steps.
