Claiborne County Commission approves multiple budget amendments, grants and $1,500 in sports contributions

The Claiborne County Commission on May 17 approved a series of budget amendments, grant allocations and contributions covering school grants, CARES and other county funds, voting unanimously on each item.
The commission approved Res. 2021-039 to add $550,822.77 in state grants for Covid-related learning-loss to the Board of Education budget and itemized more than $550,000 across teachers’ salaries, educational assistants, benefits, instructional supplies and software. Commissioners also approved Res. 2021-038 to add a $31,900 School Board mini grant to the general purpose budget.
In addition, the commission approved Res. 2021-042 to transfer $471,955.66 in CARES Grant #2 funds to the Claiborne County Board of Education to pay for Chromebooks, student meal distributions from summer 2020 and related staff wages.
The body also approved Res. 2021-037 to spend $4,000 from the Register of Deed’s reserve to professionally scan ten older deed books for preservation after receiving a $400-per-book quote from Business Information Systems. A separate amendment (Res. 2021-043) adjusted medical and unemployment line items in the General (101), Sanitation (116) and Highway (131) funds to cover rising health insurance and unemployment costs.
Res. 2021-041 added $22,000 in Hotel/Motel tax revenue to the budget and appropriated it for industrial development contributions. The commission also approved Res. 2021-040 to realign General Sessions and Juvenile Services line items to permit purchases and contracted services for Judge Robert Estep’s offices.
The commission voted to contribute a total of $1,500 (Res. 2021-044) to support students traveling to state competitions — $500 each to Claiborne High Track, Claiborne High Tennis and Cumberland Gap Track — using undesignated fund balance.
