County landfill fire buried after multi-agency response; officials expect it to be out by Friday

Landfill Chair Steve Burrough updated the Carter County Board of Commissioners on Dec. 15 about a fire at the county landfill that began the previous Wednesday.
Burrough said contractors were called to build an access pad and place shale; representatives from the Tennessee Fire Association advised burying the affected material and the county proceeded with that plan after confirming runoff and stormwater controls with the appropriate staff. "As of now everything is good, and they are hoping it will be out by Friday," Burrough said, and he commended landfill staff for extended shifts and "exceptional" work.
Vice Chair Carole Whaley joined the update, and Burrough noted that work included coordination with county staff and outside responders to avoid TEMA and TDEC violations.
The update did not include an estimate of environmental remediation costs or a timetable for reopening any affected landfill operations. County staff said they would continue monitoring and coordinate with state agencies as needed.
