Benton County establishes redistricting committee, sets Nov. 15 deadline

On Sept. 20, 2021 the Benton County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution to establish a Redistricting Committee to prepare suggested boundary plans for county legislative districts, citing Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 5-1-111. The committee must submit final suggested redistricting plans to the Benton County Legislative Body by Nov. 15, 2021.
The resolution lists committee members as Randy Shannon, Rosanne Ward, Ryan Hall, Tony Brewer, Tonona Litle, Shanna Kennon, Justin Thornton, Terry Keihn, Gary Furr and Jeff Beasley and directs the committee to elect a chair, vice-chair and secretary at its first meeting. Meetings and records of the committee are subject to Tennessee's open meetings and open records laws, and the committee chair is instructed to report the committee’s status at each regular legislative meeting.
The resolution also directs the committee to prepare suggested redistricting plans so that county legislative members represent substantially equal populations, a requirement specified in the cited statute.
