The Bland County Board of Supervisors voted unanimously May 28 to approve its consent agenda, appropriate two small grants and schedule a follow-up meeting to adopt the county's fiscal year 2025 budget.
The board approved consent items that included payroll and vendor payments and the Bland County School Board's June 2024 requisition of $1,112,984.67. Supervisor Stephen Kelley moved to approve the consent agenda; Randy Johnson seconded the motion, and the roll call votes were recorded as unanimous.
The action clears funding requests submitted by the Bland County School Board and authorizes routine disbursements and departmental reports included in the consent package. The consent agenda also appropriated a March 2024 Social Services local allotment of $18,846.70 and recorded routine departmental reports for the treasurer, building official, zoning, clerk's office and the E911 coordinator.
The board also approved two grant appropriations. By unanimous vote the supervisors appropriated $2,250 from the Dollar General Literacy Grant to the Bland County Public Library, a motion made by Stephen Kelley and seconded by Randy Johnson. Separately, the board unanimously appropriated $11,680 from the Virginia Tourism Corporation to Bland County Tourism on a motion by Randy Johnson seconded by Patrick Groseclose.
Chairman Keith Costello opened a public hearing on the FY25 Bland County and schools budget but closed it after no members of the public spoke. The board recessed the meeting until June 7, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. for formal adoption of the FY25 budget.
The supervisors moved into an executive session to discuss the annual evaluation of County Administrator Cameron Burton under the authority of Virginia Code §2.2-3711(A). The board returned to open session and unanimously adopted the certification required by Section 2.2-3712 of the Code of Virginia that only the announced matters were discussed.
The board also approved a proclamation recognizing Kathryn Dunn for her years of service to the Bland County Extension office since 1986.
The next scheduled meeting activity on the FY25 budget is the recessed session set for June 7, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at the Bland County Courthouse.
