Tazewell County Planning Commission reappoints Ann Robinson as chair, approves two junkyard permits and sets comprehensive plan sessions

At its Feb. 10, 2022 reorganizational meeting the Tazewell County Planning Commission reappointed Ann Robinson chair, retained Robert "Bob" Moss as vice-chair, named Kimberly Hilbert executive secretary, approved two annual junkyard permits and scheduled a subcommittee work session on the county comprehensive plan.
Ann Robinson, chairperson of the Tazewell County Planning Commission, was reappointed chair for 2022 at the commission's reorganizational meeting on Feb. 10, 2022. The motion to appoint Robinson was moved by Member Darrell Addison, seconded by Jason Herndon and adopted by the commission; Robinson abstained from the final vote.
The commission also retained Robert "Bob" Moss as vice-chair for 2022 and unanimously appointed Kimberly Hilbert as executive secretary. Chairperson Robinson announced the commission's regular meeting schedule for the year: the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
Director of County Engineering Kenneth Dunford, Jr., presented two annual junkyard renewal applications and recommended approval. The commission approved Auto Salvage and Junkyard Permits for Dandee's Inc. (fee received Jan. 3, 2022) and for John's Auto Salvage (Rogic) (fee received Dec. 28, 2021); both motions passed by recorded votes of 6 to 0 with Member Maggie Asbury absent.
The commission approved keeping the current subcommittee assignments for 2022. The Comprehensive Plan subcommittee will include Members Darrell Addison and Robert Moss with Charlie Hart as alternate; other subcommittees and alternates were listed and approved.
Mr. Dunford outlined options for progressing the county's comprehensive plan, including short work sessions after regular meetings, using meeting time when agenda items are light, or holding monthly subcommittee meetings focused by section. The commission selected the subcommittee approach and scheduled the next Comprehensive Plan meeting for Thursday, March 10, 2022 at 5:30 p.m. in the Board of Supervisors' board room; committee participants will include Members Addison and Moss, Kenneth Dunford, Jr., and Executive Secretary Kimberly Hilbert.
Under member concerns, Eddie Pauley asked who owns a particular junkyard; County Attorney Chase Collins said the issue traces to a 1987 ordinance and agreed to research deeds to identify ownership and responsibility. Member Jason Herndon noted a recent ground-breaking for student housing at the college and asked what the college is doing to prepare students for positions at an upcoming fish hatchery project; bids for the fish farm were noted as solicited.
The commission approved the meeting agenda (with the deletion of Item 7a, E & S Plan Mabrey), and approved the Dec. 9, 2021 minutes with a correction to identify "Falls Mills" rather than "Abbs Valley" under Member Concerns. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 7:10 p.m.; the next regular meeting was announced as Thursday, April 14, 2022 at 6:30 p.m.
