The Tazewell County Planning Commission on Aug. 11 voted to table consideration of proposed Simmons Road improvements until its Sept. 8 meeting after members heard the project would affect an estimated 12–15 residences and one business.
Member Jason Herndon said the road needs to be a public road rather than remain private and recommended staff check for grant funding opportunities. Member Darrell Addison urged engagement with the Industrial Development Authority and local stakeholders; meeting notes record that the owner of Smith Excavating indicated willingness to assist and that the commission should set up a meeting with the IDA, the Road Committee, the Public Service Authority and Smith.
The commission approved the motion to table on a 5–0 vote, with Members Ann Robinson and Eddie Pauley recorded as absent. Assistant Chair Robert "Bob" Moss presided over the vote.
Why it matters: converting a private road to a public road and securing funding can unlock public maintenance and capital dollars, but also raises questions about ownership, engineering standards and potential right-of-way needs that the commission signaled it wants to resolve with involved stakeholders before taking formal action.
Next steps: the commission directed staff and the Road Committee to arrange a meeting with the IDA, PSA and the business owner to discuss funding options and technical needs ahead of the Sept. 8, 2022 meeting. The commission took no final action to authorize design or funding at this meeting.
