Commission discusses junkyard enforcement; Board of Supervisors weighing tougher ordinance

Members of the Tazewell County Planning Commission raised concerns about junkyard enforcement during the Nov. 10 meeting. County Attorney Chase Collins told the commission that enforcement is carried out by the Sheriff's Department and that violations carry a Class 1 misdemeanor charge. Collins said staff will work on a memorandum to the Board of Supervisors.
Member Maggie Asbury said the Board of Supervisors discussed making the ordinance stiffer and is considering creating a Demo of Property committee. Asbury said she is arranging for the Board of Supervisors to tour the Pure Salmon location and invited Planning Commission members to attend. She also asked that commission members participate in upcoming Comprehensive Plan review meetings.
Separately, Collins informed the commission that the Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Simmons Road in December 2022. Member Eddie Pauley said he will relinquish his seat on the Planning Commission because he is moving; the commission adjourned at about 6:58 p.m.
The minutes record no votes specifically changing the ordinance at this meeting; members asked staff and the Board of Supervisors to consider next steps.
