Communities in Schools outlines student supports; CPMT approves closed-session case funding and corrects case wording

Seven Communities in Schools (CIS) Student Support Coordinators briefed Tazewell County’s CPMT on Oct. 24 about services the program provides to students and families, then members moved into a certified closed session and approved case funding.
During a group presentation, CIS coordinators described support delivered at school and in homes — including dental and medical services, assistance with Medicaid enrollment, tutoring and mental-health supports — and said the program addresses truancy and relies primarily on grant funding and faith-based partners rather than school-district budgets. CPMT members introduced themselves, discussed partnership opportunities and received brochures from Family Preservation Services; the Tazewell County Department of Social Services provided a site tour offer.
Later in the meeting, Shanna Plaster moved and Dwayne Sturgill seconded that CPMT enter closed session to discuss Foster Care, CPS, Cumberland, Court Services and Tazewell County Schools cases and related funding. The committee certified the closed meeting under the Virginia Freedom of Information Act; the certification noted that only matters permitted by law were discussed. The recorded vote on the certification was AYES 7, NAYS 0, ABSENT 2.
Following the closed session, the committee approved the cases and funding discussed (motion by Dwayne Sturgill, seconded by Jeff Brintle) and then returned to open session (motion by Jeff Brintle, seconded by Robin Jackson). The minutes record that members approved the closed-session actions.
Separately, Jeff Brintle flagged incorrect language in a FAPT case summary (case #10454185) that attributed an "emergency removal order" to the Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice. Vice Chair David Taylor agreed to research the correct terminology; the CSA Coordinator updated the case file on Oct. 25, 2022 to correct the wording to "emergency removal petition entered by Virginia Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court."
