Lunenburg County Electoral Board reviews expiring cybersecurity contract, training needs and minor office flood

The Lunenburg County Electoral Board met Jan. 10, 2023, and considered several administrative items central to maintaining election operations, including an expiring cybersecurity contract, training needs for new election officials and a minor office flood that damaged only a few forms. Chairman Donna Dagner called the meeting to order at 4:02 PM and welcomed David Dalton as the board's newest member and vice chairman.
Board members discussed the cybersecurity services contract with Assura, which the minutes say is due to expire in March. Secretary Oliver Wright reported he is seeking a quote from Assura to continue services through the fiscal year end in June; Wright said that quote will be presented to the Board of Supervisors for consideration. The board identified this as a budget and continuity issue for election security and operations.
Dagner also updated the board on training: she described the online training completed by new election officials and told Dalton how the training process works. The board agreed that next year’s budget will need to include funds for extra training for incoming election officials and for electronic poll book training.
The registrar reported a broken pipe caused flooding in the office. According to the minutes, remedial action was taken, no equipment was damaged and only a few paper forms were ruined. Separately, the board addressed a request from Timothy Hatley, who said he could not find his write-in vote on the state website. After checking records, the board determined Hatley had misstated his precinct; his write-in vote was recorded in the correct precinct and an image of the write-in was on the tape. Secretary Wright will notify Hatley of the results.
On facilities, Wright reported that the Clerk of the Court offered the board a controlled storage room in the courthouse. Wright inspected the room and found it suitable but said the clerk must clear some items and the board will need to obtain a sheriff-issued key card for access.
Dagner briefed the board on proposed new laws in the state legislature that could affect elections administration; the minutes do not specify individual bills. She also told Dalton about the VBEBA annual meeting in Roanoke and the registrar said he would ensure Dalton’s contact information is sent to VBEBA and to the Department of Elections so Dalton will receive meeting materials and email updates.
The board set its next meeting for Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2023, at 4:00 PM. The meeting was adjourned at 5:20 PM.
