At a Feb. 1, 2022 meeting, the Lunenburg County Electoral Board discussed complying with a state mandate to upgrade voting-machine software and agreed to coordinate timing with county administration.
Chairman Donna Dagner called the meeting to order at 3:37 p.m. and the board considered a vendor proposal to perform the required software update during regularly scheduled periodic maintenance to save costs. The vendor offered two scheduling options: complete the update in the current fiscal year or defer to the next fiscal year. Secretary Oliver Wright said he would notify the County Administrator to determine which option the county should choose.
The board also planned acceptance testing and training for newly purchased electronic poll book printers. Secretary Oliver Wright will contact Mike Brown to schedule the acceptance testing and the associated training sessions.
Members reviewed a report that Lunenburg County has grant funding for cybersecurity services from Assura routed through the Regional Council to assist the county in meeting milestones through the end of the calendar year. The minutes identify specific deadlines at the end of February and the beginning of March that the county must meet to keep the grant on track; Secretary Wright was assigned to work on meeting those requirements.
Board members discussed the practical overlap between the equipment upgrades and cybersecurity needs, and identified sequencing and training as immediate next steps. The board did not record a formal vote on the timing of the software update; instead, it recorded the Secretary’s assignment to notify the County Administrator and arrange testing and training.
Next steps: Secretary Oliver Wright will notify the County Administrator about the vendor’s timing options and will contact Mike Brown to schedule acceptance testing and training; the board will monitor grant deadlines at the end of February and the beginning of March.
