Donna Dagner presented the application (CUP 2-23), outlining the food pantry’s history, current operations, reason for relocating and the group’s primary clientele and service area. The application covers a 5.08-acre parcel; the nonprofit will use two acres subdivided from that parcel, which Clerk Taylor N. King said will be gifted to the organization.
Clerk Taylor N. King read the conditions staff recommends if the commission forwards the application to the Board of Supervisors and requested a wording change related to VDOT requirements and an added condition requiring removal of trash, garbage and debris from the property. Commissioner Shell moved to recommend approval with those conditions and modifications; Commissioner Thompson seconded the motion.
In a roll-call vote, Commissioners Thompson, Shell, Drummond, Jennings, Tharpe and Garrett each voted to recommend approval. Commissioner Thompson said, "They have been an asset to the County." Commissioner Shell and others echoed support, noting the pantry addresses food insecurity in the county. The motion passed unanimously.
Clerk King advised that the Board of Supervisors will consider the application at its July 13, 2023 meeting at 6:00 p.m. in the 2nd floor courtroom of the Lunenburg Courts Building. No final action was taken by the Board at this meeting; the commission’s recommendation transmits the application with conditions for the supervisors’ action.
