At its Aug. 8 meeting the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors approved the consent agenda, heard routine reports from school officials and VDOT, accepted a small grant for election equipment, declared county property surplus, and presented certificates to long-serving election officers.
Mrs. Jessica Nowlin presented the school system’s June 2024 revenue/expenditure report and a post-year report as of Aug. 2. She said several grant reimbursements remain outstanding and will need to be accrued into FY2023–24. She reported the Victoria Elementary fire sprinkler project is substantially complete, high school renovation design is expected by late November, open house was curtailed by weather, convocation is scheduled for Aug. 9, and students begin Aug. 12. Supervisor T. Wayne Hoover asked that the Finance Committees meet in October to review enrollment and stable ADM figures.
Mr. Kevin Smith of VDOT said crews were operating in storm mode and noted ongoing paving on Route 635 (Oral Oaks Road). He said the Arvin Store Road bridge would be closed for repairs beginning Sept. 3 with reopening expected by Oct. 17.
General Registrar Alissa Baldwin reported that a recount of the 5th Congressional District Republican primary confirmed the original tabulation; she thanked officers of election and the board and Electoral Board presented certificates to several officers with 10 or more years of service.
Administrator Tracy M. Gee said the Registrar’s Office received a $5,500 grant to implement a Ballot-On-Demand system that the county will initially purchase with local funds and then seek reimbursement; the board unanimously accepted and appropriated the grant. Gee also reported that Airport Manager Larry Way is working on airport lighting upgrades needed for night operations, that drainage work and interior renovations are planned to address a leak in the tax office building, and that the county and attorney have been meeting with Dominion Energy regarding possible revisions to the Unity Substation conditional use permit to be discussed in September.
The board also unanimously declared a Canon Image Runner copier and a large metal shelving unit surplus for disposal and adjourned the meeting.
