Resident proposes 'Litter-Free Lunenburg' and asks county support; VDOT offers cleanup supplies

During the public-comment period of the Nov. 14 meeting, Miss Julie Bender of Kenbridge asked the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors for support in organizing roadside litter cleanups under the name “Litter-Free Lunenburg.” Bender said she had recently noticed an increase in litter along county roadways and told the board she believes some of it is coming from trucks hauling trash to the landfill.
Kevin Smith of the Virginia Department of Transportation told the board VDOT crews could assist local cleanup efforts by providing trash bags, flags and safety vests. County staff and VDOT offered to coordinate support for community-organized events; no enforcement actions or findings about litter sources were presented during the meeting.
Next steps: VDOT offered material support and the resident indicated she will work with the county and partners to plan additional cleanup events; any enforcement or formal investigation into litter origins was not discussed at the meeting.
