Board approves partial abandonment of 0.08-mile Hickory Road segment; VDOT reports funding for 2.5 miles of paving

The Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the partial abandonment of a 0.08-mile segment of Secondary Route 697 (Hickory Road) following a staff presentation that said the request came from residents of the affected segment.
Kevin Smith of VDOT explained the segment is a dead-end, gravel road and that VDOT had received the abandonment request from residents. The Board approved a motion authorizing the chairman to sign the accompanying resolution.
In his monthly report, Smith also said crews are repairing potholes and that there is enough funding to add 2.5 miles of paving to the county’s Secondary Six Year Plan. He recommended the Board consider holding a public hearing on the rural rustic plan in May to review potential paving priorities.
No public comment was recorded on the Hickory Road abandonment at the hearing.
The Board’s action authorizes county staff to file the required documents and proceed under state procedures for partial abandonment of the specified road segment.
