Mecosta County board accepts 2024 audit, approves insurance renewal, grants and budget changes

The Mecosta County Board of Commissioners voted June 18 to accept the County of Mecosta's 2024 audit and to approve a series of fiscal and administrative measures intended to close out accounts and reduce near-term costs.
Paul Matz of Rehmann presented the 2024 audit and said county staff were well-prepared for the review. Commissioner Chris Jane moved to accept and place the 2024 audit on file; the board approved the motion by roll call, 6 yeas and 0 nays.
The board approved the Area Agency on Aging Western Michigan's Annual Implementation Plan for fiscal year 2026, securing funding for programs serving older adults and caregivers from Oct. 1, 2025, to Sept. 30, 2026. Commissioners also authorized the COA Meals Coordinator to operate a food wagon at the Wheatland Music Festival (Sept. 3'8, 2025) and to hold the annual Prime Rib fundraising dinner on Aug. 7, 2025.
On insurance and risk management, County Administrator Mindy Taylor recommended approving the MMRMA renewal for 2025 with raised liability deductibles (Liability SIR to $150,000 from $100,000 and Stop-Loss entry point to $225,000 from $175,000) to lower the premium to $222,000. Commissioner Gary Lambrix moved to approve the renewal and to authorize the administrator to sign; the motion passed by roll call vote, 6-0.
Financial housekeeping actions included a $1,980 budget amendment to the Register of Deeds Tech Fund to cover a purchased laptop; acceptance of the March 2025 financial reports; authorization to pay pre-approved vouchers totaling $803,346.48 and additional bills of $176,598.55; and EMS write-offs for May 2025 (contractual $87,036.10; non-contractual $5,736.34; collections $4,787.66). Where recorded, these motions passed by roll call votes of 6 yeas, 0 nays.
The board approved a change to the county's third-party administrator (TPA) for benefits: the administrator was authorized to issue a 30-day notice to Acrisure and proceed with Gallagher as the TPA, a move approved by roll call vote. Commissioners also approved sending two decommissioned vehicles to auction and adjusted the per-inspection fee for the mechanical and plumbing inspector to $70.
A $7,950 Marine Safety Program grant agreement was approved to support local marine safety work. Administrator Taylor also noted potential RAP grant opportunities that could offset roughly $50,000 each for body cameras and tasers.
The meeting concluded with the board receiving communications, minutes, reports and resolutions and adjourning at 5:00 p.m.
What happens next: several finance items and the final distribution of 2024 MET funds are scheduled for further consideration at a Committee of the Whole meeting June 25, with final fund allocations to be voted at the July 3 board meeting.
