Residents urge county engagement on Coldwater Lake sewer project and raise concerns about MRF, jail and county building costs

Several residents addressed the Isabella County Board of Commissioners Sept. 2 with concerns that the Board said it would note but did not act on during the meeting.
Pat Schafer asked the Board to attend the next township meeting about the Coldwater Lake sewer project. Brad Hall said property owners within the special-assessment district should not shoulder the entire cost to extend sewer service to Coldwater Lake Family Park and urged Isabella County to contribute to operation and maintenance costs; he also suggested adjusting the parks fee schedule. Patricia Carrick asked the Board to attend township meetings as well.
During a later public-comment period, Karen Schafer expressed concern that the sewer system could cause residents to be displaced from their homes. Robert Nagy asked questions about proposed changes to the county's Material Recovery Facility (MRF), inquired about rent costs for county properties and asked how much it would cost to tear down or sell the Administration Building, referenced traffic-safety needs (red lights and curb cuts) and requested an update on jail housing and costs.
The minutes record these comments and questions but do not show commissioners adopting any new policy, committing county funds, or directing staff to take the specific actions residents requested. Chairman Frank Engler and other commissioners acknowledged the comments; Commissioner James Moreno announced he would be attending the Michigan Climate Action Summit and reminded the public of upcoming household hazardous-waste and tire-collection events.
