Summary
At its Aug. 11 meeting, the Chippewa County Department of Veterans Affairs Committee heard that the office logged about 75 visits and 323 calls between June 24 and July 28, completed a CVTF FY26 application and coordinated outreach including a veterans fishing tournament and an Aug. 13 outreach event.
The Chippewa County Department of Veterans Affairs Committee met Aug. 11, 2025, at the Chippewa Courthouse in Sault Ste. Marie. Chairman Jim Shogren called the meeting to order at 4:00 p.m. and the committee, which had a quorum, conducted routine business.
John Miller, listed in the minutes as “Others present,” reported that the veterans office was open for 35 days between June 24 and July 28, 2025, during which it recorded about 75 in-person visits and approximately 323 phone calls. Miller said he conducted several home visits for veterans who could not come to the office.
Miller described recent outreach activities: he and his wife marched in the Drummond Island Fourth of July parade to promote the office (his wife handed out candy), and the Veterans Fishing Tournament in Barbeau was held July 13 after a rain delay. Miller said he plans to attend Suicide Awareness training that was scheduled for July 29–31 and that he and a colleague, Cady, completed the CVTF application for fiscal 2026.
On services and funding, Miller reported the DAV transportation program is operating well. He said the Michigan Veterans Trust Fund (MVTF) has been the primary source for many veterans’ needs and that the Tri-County Veterans Fund, which places donation boots in area businesses, has also provided assistance. Miller added that the office has worked with Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) to help homeless veterans seek housing and VA benefits.
Miller announced an upcoming veterans outreach at American Legion Post No. 3 on Aug. 13 at 10 a.m., noting that the public relations team from Iron Mountain Medical would attend and that he planned to be present.
The committee handled routine procedural items by voice vote. Robert Savoie moved to approve the meeting agenda, supported by Brooks Partridge; the motion carried. The committee reviewed and approved the June 24, 2025 minutes on a motion by Savoie supported by Chairman Jim Shogren. Members also voted to schedule the next meeting for Aug. 26, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. (motion by Savoie, supported by Partridge). Chairman Shogren moved to adjourn, Partridge supported the motion, and the meeting adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
No funds were reported as used in July 2025 for burials, grave markers, food assistance, or MVAA grant categories listed in the minutes; the committee noted no action was required on those line items.
The minutes close with a signature line for Brooks Partridge listed as acting chairman (the transcript contains a typographical error in the signature line).
