Summary
Staff reported office activity (about 55 visits and 266 calls), outreach events at Brimley VFW and a Flag Day ceremony, continuation of the DAV transportation program, and approval of $150 in MVAA grant distributions for transportation and food assistance.
The Chippewa County Department of Veteran Affairs Committee met June 24, 2025, at the Chippewa Courthouse in Sault Ste. Marie and received a monthly operations and outreach report from staff.
The office was open 28 days between May 28 and June 24 and recorded roughly 55 in‑office visits and about 266 phone calls during that period. Staff conducted home visits for veterans unable to travel to the office and held an outreach event at Brimley VFW #9023 in coordination with SSVF I Community Action; committee members noted a larger outreach event is planned for the fall.
Staff also reported attendance at a Flag Day ceremony in Pickford presented by AMVETS and the American Legion. "I was glad I was allowed to attend and assist with the flags," said staff member John Miller. Miller told the committee he had spoken with Dave Spencer of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), who attended the DAV state meeting and reported the local chapter will continue operations. The minutes record that the county's DAV transportation program is operating well.
The committee approved MVAA (Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency) grant distributions totaling $150: $50 for transportation and $100 for food assistance. The committee moved and approved the distribution on a voice vote.
The office processed two Michigan Veteran Trust Fund (MVTF) applications during the period; one application was fully approved, a second is awaiting state committee approval, and staff are working on a third application.
The committee set its next meeting for July 28, 2025, and adjourned at 4:15 p.m.
