Summary
Manager Laitinen told commissioners staff had contacted Senators Damoose and McBroom about a stalled state road funding package, noted MITA rallies, and provided construction progress: Chub Creek deck poured, 16 Mile bridge installed and backfill underway, 12 Mile Bridge removal complete, and Mackinac Trail finished.
Manager Laitinen told the Chippewa County Road Commissioners on Aug. 28 that office staff participated in coordinated outreach to state Senators about a stalled state road funding package and that the Michigan Infrastructure and Transportation Association plans rallies in support of the funding effort in Negaunee and on the capitol lawn.
Laitinen said the office is monitoring legislative progress and noted a recent EGLE (Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy) soil erosion representative visited county work sites; the visit identified a single paperwork deficiency that the office is correcting. A draft document for Sims Point Road on Drummond Island is under review.
On construction, Laitinen reported the deck pour for the Chub Creek Bridge occurred under favorable conditions; the 16 Mile bridge structure has been installed and crews are working on backfill; removal of the 12 Mile Bridge is complete; and work on Mackinac Trail is finished. He said a representative from Peterbilt will visit the site next week to display a newer-model truck.
These items were reported as informational in the manager’s report; no formal policy changes or funding appropriation votes were conducted during the meeting.
