Chippewa County Road Commission approves payroll, vouchers and awards fuel and lubricant contracts

The Chippewa County Road Commission on June 5 approved payroll of $182,852.62 and vouchers of $540,972.59 and voted to award new fuel and bulk lubricant contracts, the commission said at its regular meeting in Sault Ste. Marie.
The approvals were part of routine finance actions at the start of the meeting. Office Manager Bobbie Livermore said year-end financials showed revenue exceeded expenses and that the current ratio supports a solid short-term financial position. Livermore also flagged major accounts-payable items including the county’s MERS contribution, BCBSM insurance costs and an installment loan at First National of St. Ignace.
In new business, Manager Laitinen presented fuel bid results and recommended awarding regional fuel service to Autore/Shute, which offered the best overall pricing except for the Soo garage. Laitinen noted delivery reliability factored into the recommendation, saying Autore/Shute’s winter blend is sourced below the bridge while one bidder’s winter blend would come from Wisconsin and could have been undeliverable during the Ice Storm of 2025 if the bridge closed. Commissioner Moser moved the award and Commissioner Sprague seconded; the motion carried.
The board also reviewed bulk lubricant bids. Safety Clean submitted Performance Plus products but did not include the required letter of equivalency; Texas Refinery bid synthetic products at significantly higher pricing; Northern Energy bid Chevron products to specification and was the low bidder. The commission voted to award the bulk lubricant contract to Northern Energy.
The meeting record shows the motions were made and carried but does not list individual roll-call tallies. No amendments to either award were recorded.
The commission noted an administrative scheduling change: because the June 19 meeting date falls on a federal holiday, Clerk McLean recommended processing payroll on Wednesday, June 18; Office Manager Livermore said signatures for fund transfers could be obtained that day and approvals reaffirmed on June 19.
The commission’s next regular meeting is scheduled for June 19, 2025.
