Residents praise EMS response and press for fuller Parks & Recreation discussion; school superintendent presents strategic plan

At the Benzie County Board of Commissioners meeting on Oct. 14, residents and department heads highlighted local emergency services and park-planning concerns.
During the morning public-comment period, Bud Frankenberger of Crystal Lake Township thanked Benzie County EMS "for their quick response and actions" to a call at his residence and praised the county for maintaining "a first-quality EMS in this county." EMS Director Tom King later noted that positive community feedback often goes unreported and introduced staff present to hear the praise.
Two Crystal Lake Township residents criticized a recent Parks and Recreation public hearing. Tadge Juechter said he was "disappointed" that last Thursday’s hearing was a hearing "in name only," and Mary Juechter urged more discussion about moving the Betsie Valley Trail by the Crystal Lake Outlet.
Health department and school presentations preceded the business portion of the meeting. Dan Thorell, director of the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department, reviewed how marijuana funds had been spent across the year and summarized the department’s budget status. Benzie Central School Superintendent Amiee Erfourth presented the district’s strategic plan and answered questions from commissioners.
The public comment period closed at 9:11 a.m.; the meeting later recessed at 10:49 a.m. and adjourned at 12:13 p.m.
