Alpena County LEPC schedules military PFAS briefing; Holcim offsite response plan set for July

The Alpena County Local Emergency Planning Committee on May 15 heard that the military will present a briefing on PFAS at the LEPC's July 17 meeting and that Holcim's offsite response plan will be presented at the July meeting, committee members said. Director of Emergency Management and E911 Services Kim Elkie reported the announcements during the meeting.
The updates came during the director's quarterly report. Elkie told the committee that Holcim's offsite response plan is scheduled for review at the July meeting and that "there are numerous additional substances on this year's plan," indicating the committee will examine multiple hazardous-substance response items in the coming months.
Members conducted routine business before those information items. Nick Harrison moved to approve the meeting agenda, with support from Erik Smith; the motion carried. Rory Sherwood moved to approve the minutes from the LEPC meeting held Feb. 20, 2025, with support from Cristen Pedersen; that motion also carried. Nick Harrison later moved to adjourn with support from Rob Edmonds; the meeting adjourned at 1:35 p.m.
The committee did not take formal votes on response plans at the May meeting; the Holcim offsite response plan and the military PFAS briefing are scheduled for the July meeting. The LEPC's next steps will be to receive those presentations and consider any recommended actions or plan updates at that time.
