Committee recommends $510,963 insurance renewal, easement for Bailey Nature Preserve and several appointments

The Barry County Committee of the Whole on July 15 recommended unanimous approval of several administrative and land-use measures and forwarded them to the full Board of Commissioners for final consideration.
The committee voted to recommend renewal of Liability, Vehicle Physical Damage, Property and Crime insurance through the Michigan Municipal Risk Management Authority for the period July 1, 2025 to July 1, 2026 in the amount of $510,963. The motion to recommend the renewal was moved by Commissioner David Hatfield and seconded by Commissioner Catherine Getty; the committee recorded all ayes.
The committee recommended execution of a conservation easement on the Bailey Nature Preserve with the Southwest Michigan Land Conservancy. The motion, moved by Commissioner Bob Teunessen and seconded by Commissioner David Hatfield, passed with all ayes.
County Administrator Eric Zuzga asked the committee to recommend disposal of multiple county vehicles by private sale or scrap; Commissioner Marsha Bassett moved the recommendation and Commissioner Catherine Getty seconded it. The motion passed unanimously. The minutes list the disposition method but do not specify vehicle make/models in the public text.
The committee also recommended appointing County Administrator Eric Zuzga as Officer Delegate and Commissioner Marsha Bassett as Officer Alternate to attend the Municipal Employees Retirement System (MERS) annual meeting Oct. 16–17, 2025 at the Grand Traverse Resort in Acme, Michigan, and approved paying expenses for the Officer Delegate and the Employee Delegate to attend. That motion was moved by Commissioner David Hatfield and seconded by Commissioner Jon Smelker; it carried all ayes.
Commissioners recommended appointment of Dr. Nicholas Kostelecky as a Deputy Medical Examiner for Barry County effective immediately; the motion was moved by Commissioner Jon Smelker and seconded by Commissioner David Hatfield and passed unanimously.
The committee recommended appointing Jerry Wilson to serve on the Barry County Community Mental Health Authority Board for a three-year term beginning April 1, 2025 and expiring March 31, 2028. Commissioner Marsha Bassett moved the recommendation; Commissioner Bruce Campbell seconded it, and the committee voted all ayes.
The Committee of the Whole is an advisory body; each of the motions above was recorded as a recommendation to the full Board of Commissioners. The Board will need to take final action at a subsequent meeting; the minutes do not specify the Board meeting date for final consideration. The committee adjourned at 10:05 a.m.
