Committee notes Earned Sick Time Act deadline, reviews credit-checks and staffing updates

At its March 4 meeting the Alpena County Personnel Committee covered several informational personnel items, including the deadline to adopt an Earned Sick Time Act policy, a review of preemployment credit checks for cash-handling roles, background-check funding for Parks, staffing updates, and scheduling of library-board interviews.
HR Specialist Jennifer Mathis reported that the Earned Sick Time Act has passed and the county has until March 23 to get a policy into place; the draft policy is under attorney review and will be sent out by poll vote for approval after review. Administrator Jesse Osmer raised reinstating credit checks for positions that will handle cash, noting the county previously had such a policy; he said he will return with cost information and examples from other counties.
Regarding background checks for Parks staff, Chair Brenda Foumier said background-check fees should be charged to the Parks budget rather than the General Fund and asked that the item be added to the Parks agenda for further discussion. Mathis also summarized recent personnel moves: an employee moved from the Prosecutor's Office to District Court; a new Prosecutor's Office hire is starting soon; a new Treasurer's Office employee started; and Long Lake Park hired a new co-manager.
Chair Foumier said the appointment of a new library-board member will be moved to March 17, with second interviews for Mary Jo Saylor, Jennifer Graham, Carol Boboltz and Sarah Fritz. The committee scheduled its next meeting for April 1, 2025, at 12:00 p.m.
