Committee receives Emergency Management, 911, and Sheriff program updates; monthly reports filed

Emergency Management and E/911 Services Director Kim Elkie briefed the committee on Jan. 13 about 2024 operations and recent equipment purchases funded by a Region 7 Homeland Security Grant.
Elkie reported the department took 9,488 calls and processed 26,903 incidents in 2024, and said the unit is fully staffed with 10 full-time and one part-time employees. She reported 410 text conversations during 2024 (110 initiated by users), said the grant purchased five laptops for the emergency operations center and had previously covered a color printer and a large-screen television, and said the department plans a training exercise with Lake State Railroad. Elkie also noted a surcharge will appear on next year’s ballot to provide funding and that the department is doing monthly community updates on social media.
Sheriff Erik Smith reported the Sheriff’s Office Drug/Alcohol Tether Program, run by Deputy Mike Lash, brought in just under $17,000 since it began last April.
Chair Lucille Bray moved and Commissioner Dan Ludlow supported motions to receive and file the Ambulance Fund, Medical Examiners, and Veterans Affairs monthly reports; the motions carried.
