Michelle Bailey, director of the Sunrise Mission, told the Alpena County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 30 that the shelter is operating beyond capacity and that the community is experiencing a homelessness crisis, particularly affecting women, children and families.
Bailey cited data reported by Northeast Michigan Community Service Agency (NEMCSA) that there are about 130 unsheltered women, children and individuals in Alpena. She asked the board for assistance to support the shelter and the community. Chair John Kozlowski asked Bailey to contact the commissioners’ office so the mission could be placed on a future agenda for further discussion.
The board did not take immediate action but directed staff to add Sunrise Mission to a future meeting so members can present options and needs in more detail.
