Board approves contracts, grant allocations and equipment purchases including medical examiner fee increase and AEDs

At its Oct. 30 meeting, the Alpena County Board of Commissioners approved several departmental contracts, grant allocations and equipment purchases.
Administrator Jesse Osmer presented a request from the Mid‑Michigan Medical Examiner Group to increase investigator per‑case fees by $498 effective with the 2026 calendar year; the board approved the contractual increase. The board also approved a Public Defender agreement with the Northeast Michigan Regional Public Defender's Office totaling $868,364.05 for the year and a MAC Administrator agreement with Bill Pfeifer for $20,280.
The Courts & Public Safety Committee had recommended approval of the Sheriff's request to purchase 13 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) and a trainer at an approximate cost of $28,000 to equip patrol vehicles, marine units and add an AED at the jail; funding will come from the Ambulance Millage Fund. Commissioners approved the purchase.
Committee chairs presented recommended grant allocations: the Older Persons Committee’s recommendations (most requests funded at 95% or more) and the Youth & Recreation Committee’s allocations, which funded $483,549 of $589,914 requested and included a $75,000 contingency for mini‑grants. Both allocation packages were approved.
The board also approved moving certain consent items (including advancing consideration for sale of the former Boys & Girls Club pending attorney review and confirmation of no county cleanup obligation) as listed on the consent calendar.
