Houghton County board approves bills, ARPA-funded generator and other routine items

At its May 13 meeting the Houghton County Board of Commissioners approved routine financial and equipment items, including a bulk bill payment and purchases meant to support county operations.
The board voted to pay $4,001,751.01 in bills. It approved using ARPA funds to purchase a backup generator for IT and communications from Carl’s Electric Service for $24,320.00. Commissioners also approved a $2,635.39 purchase for a new passport camera system for the County Clerk’s Office. An amended monthly appropriation for CCMH was approved at $27,415.82.
Other procedural actions included adopting a modified agenda approval policy that removes the county administrator from final agenda approval, scheduling a Truth in Taxation hearing for the June regular meeting, and approving ballot language for Canal View (renewal, 2.1 mills) and Meals on Wheels (1 mill). Travel for Delaney Ruotsala to take a CER exam on July 31 was approved.
All purchases and appropriations were carried by voice vote; where recorded, votes were unanimous or 5–0 except for two ballot items (Meals on Wheels and the justice center ballot) where Commissioner Joel Keranen voted no.
