Houghton County pauses wage study for jail work; two consultants proposed

Teresa Hill, human resources director, told the Board on June 2 that the county's wage study has been put on hold while work on the jail bond proceeds. Hill said two consulting firms had proposals: Gallagher for $50,000 and MGT for $58,000. She estimated the study would take approximately three months to complete.
Chairman Tom Tikkanen said he wanted a top‑notch report and list of comparables, including taxable values, to support fair employee compensation and upcoming union negotiations. Commissioner Joel Keranen agreed to fast‑track the study for the next board meeting. Administrator Rheault suggested wage adjustments driven by percentage formulas could reduce the need for frequent studies.
No consultant was selected at the meeting; commissioners directed that the wage‑study procurement be placed on an expedited agenda for the next board meeting.
