Commissioners plan legal follow-up after state denies indigent defense reimbursement reports

Summary
County staff and commissioners said MIDC denied at least one FSR related to Tri-County public defense reimbursements; legal counsel will be consulted and a timeline reviewed at the August work session.
Houghton County officials said on July 1 that the Michigan Indigent Defense Commission (MIDC) denied at least one financial report tied to Tri-County public defender funding, and commissioners scheduled legal follow-up to resolve the denials.
Administrator Rheault told the board he had received MIDC feedback and that the first financial status report (FSR) was denied because supporting documentation was missing. Attorney Dave Gemignani said he spoke with state officials and did not know why one FSR was denied; he said it is important to submit all required information together. Gemignani also said the county’s cost plan and analysis had been denied by the State.
Commissioners Glenn Anderson and Joel Keranen agreed to meet with Attorney Zappa to discuss the MIDC fund and a proposed five-year contract. Ann Harris recommended filing all outstanding FSRs together for review. Commissioners said they plan to review a draft timeline at the August 4 work session.
No formal contract or funding decision was made at the work session; commissioners directed legal and administrative staff to assemble documentation and a timeline for the August meeting.
