Council members on April 22 described efforts to address emergency-access challenges on private rural roads and summarized regional housing assistance programs.
Public Works Committee Chair Artie Baker said the committee met earlier and deferred detailed remarks to Councilman Carlton B. Washington, who described a staff-produced video demonstrating how emergency vehicles struggle to navigate certain private roads. Washington said council will conduct test runs on the worst routes and finalize a prioritization scale to guide repairs or interventions; Councilwoman Vivian Fleming McGhaney called the issue a basic service and public-safety priority and thanked staff for identifying the top ten problem areas.
Separately, Councilwoman McGhaney, who chairs the HOME Consortium under the Santee-Lynches Regional Council of Governments, updated council on regional housing investments. She said the Tenant-Based Rental Assistance Program currently helps 67 families, and that HOME funds of $601,788 will support two duplex projects in Sumter County. McGhaney also highlighted a $650,000 award in Lee County for Tubbs Court and noted local nonprofit partners such as Sumter United Ministries provide complementary services.
Council took no formal action on either report; both items were informational and intended to inform budget discussions and future committee work.
